What IS the thought that counts?
How many of you have ever received a gift that made you wonder what the giver was thinking?
Every year, I get lots of letters that include wishes for gifts that people don’t want. “Please, Santa, tell my mom not to give me any more bunny slippers!” I’ve learned from my years of gift-giving that although “It’s the thought that counts” is quite true, many people don’t actually put real thought into the selection. If you care enough to give someone a gift, make it meaningful.
Consider including a note that explains your choice. For example: “This mug reminded me of the time we sat at the sidewalk café, drinking lattes for hours and making up stories about the people who walked by. That’s a great memory for me!” Then, every time that person sees the mug, they will relive the same memory. This little effort can make a big difference and will remind you both of the special connection you share.
See you tomorrow!
