The first Christmas stockings
I recently promised to tell you about the history behind the custom of hanging Christmas stockings. Well, there are several tales out there, so let me tell you how I remember it happening. A very long time ago, a young woman had to have a dowry (money or valuables) in order to get married. This dowry was to be used to start the couple’s new life together. Well, there was this poor man with three daughters. Without dowries, the young women would be sold as slaves! Before each daughter was to be sold, a mysterious someone (wink wink) left a bag of gold in the stockings that were left by the fire to dry. With the gold as dowries, the girls were saved from lives as slaves!
Til tomorrow!
Love,
Santa
